One of the things I love about creating art is the zen like state I drift into. As I create my sculptures and
paintings, hours melt away with my cares and peace envelopes me. This comes quickly and naturally to
me now as I’ve been doing it all my life and use it as my centering and grounding tool but I know it’s not
so with everyone. In fact fear of failure, frustration with the technical side of art or craft puts many in
anything resembling zen!
Recently I found an art form that quickly and easily gets anyone get into this relaxed creative zone.
Zentangles!. I guarantee, no matter your experience, you will be relaxed while making amazing
creations and the benefits of your art session will roll on for a long time after you have set that pen
down. It’s also a great way to get started in art, I’ve seen many people who would never consider trying
my more complex sculptures gain confidence to try after gaining confidence with these zen doodles.
Zentangles are for everyone, no matter your skill level or age. They combine a very simple drawing
technique with the creation of patterns that quickly balance both right and left brain thinking skills to put
you into a meditative state. Some of my very best ideas have come along during a Zentangle. I also
enhance my Zentangle sessions with incense and music but I’ve been just as successful in reaching
that calm place by pulling out a sketch book in the middle of a noisy room.
For many who look at Zentangles, I’m sure you will see a strong similarity with basic ‘doodling’ and you
would be right, this is exactly where they where born. You will also be aware of the meditate state you
drift into while doodling. The term was coined a few years ago by artist and calligrapher Maria Thomas
and musician and former monk Rick Roberts who have created a wonderful community online www.
zentangle.com and offer kits, classes and ongoing artistic inspiration.
The secret to Zentangle success is focusing on one stroke at a time. This relaxes the mind, making way
for a meditate state and ensures overall success of your patterns. Whether creating your own or
recreating found zentangles, the key is to break it all down into these individual strokes.
So why don’t we just doodle instead of zentangling? The answer is that Zentangle as an art form has
given structure to what others do naturally and this makes it accessible to everyone. By providing a
starting point with predefined patterns, those with little skill can very quickly start achieving beautifully
artistic results and so find themselves reaching the meditative state found within pattern making with
ease. Those with more developed skills enjoy the challenges of creating more complex designs, using
new mediums and structures.
