My hope is that by bringing together broken, discarded, and found objects and creating something beautiful, I invite you to look a little deeper… at everything. Then look again The art I make is an invitation to connect with a world that is surprising and yet beautiful. Assemblages that express my themes of emotion, purpose and aspirations are formed from the overlooked and discarded objects of everyday life. Found objects and gifted treasures make their way into my artworks and may be layered with various experimental mediums to create new patinas and textures. Originally from Sydney, I spent a few years recently living in California, USA, where I enjoyed the opportunity to develop my style through my travels and connections with other artists. I gained an appreciation of Mexican and Native American culture which I believe has inspired me to create works with a greater emotional base. My childhood was spent in Balmain, Sydney, where days where spent riding my bike around the back lanes, train yards, or down by the waters of the bay. I would collect cicada shells, silk worm cases, old wooden crate labels and rusty metal pieces to make little scenes on my window ledge. It’s an inclination I still enjoy today, making something new from the things that no one wants. My assemblages are mixed media sculptures created from found objects. I spend most Saturdays combing the garage sales and markets of Sydney looking for my treasures. I am very keen to protect history and do not incorporate objects that should be preserved. Everyday junk also forms the base and adds embellishment to my assemblages. This part excites me as I enjoy the message of reuse, recycle and rethinking that this layer of my work brings to people. Viewers are often delighted as they realize that a piece has started life as a mint tin or drink can. I am forever experimenting with new ways to add colour and texture to my work. I use techniques that are common to fine art, model making, construction as well as my own ‘recipes’. I believe that when something interesting and beautiful comes from the overlooked, it makes people think a little deeper. |
